HESS TIMBER delivers glulam timber construction for “International House Sydney”

Australia’s first timber office building

HESS TIMBER was contracted by Stora Enso to deliver the glulam timber construction for the first engineered commercial office building in Australia constructed from timber. The “International House Sydney” is one of 13 new buildings planned by Lendlease Australia as the gateway to the Barangaroo South development project in Sydney. The office building comprising 7 storeys with approx. 7,910 m² of space will be made from 950 m³ of glued-laminated timber (glulam) and more than 2,000 m³ of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) from Stora Enso’s Ybbs CLT mill and is presumably the biggest glulam project in Australia. The building will front Exchange Place, an entry point to the precinct which is expected to host more than 33,000 visitors daily.

Designed by Australian practice Tzannes, co-design Directors Alec Tzannes and Jonathan Evans, the “International House Sydney” design concept mainly focuses on the principle of sustainability, “to serve the greater social purpose of lowering carbon emissions”, said Alec Tzannes.

HESS TIMBER has the honour to participate in this exciting project which is setting a new benchmark in the use of sustainable building materials. As Andrew Wilson, the Lendlease Managing Director of Barangaroo South said, “apart from a lower carbon footprint, engineered wood produces zero waste and is safer and generally faster to build with”.

The “International House Sydney” project is due for completion in 2017. HESS TIMBER started the production in February 2016, the glulam timber parts were shipped from March to June 2016.
