In 2019, a masterpiece of engineering and a new type of adventure architecture opened its doors directly on Lake Steinberg in the Upper Palatinate Lake District. The world’s largest walk-in wooden sphere (accessible by 950 visitors at the same time) of the inMotion Park Seenland GmbH is a superlative in many respects. With a weight of around 500 tons, a height of 40 meters and a diameter of around 50 meters, this project can be seen from afar.
DATA & FACTS
627 m³ of glulam, 190 tons of steel parts, 40,000 screws and 18,000 bolts, construction screws and rod dowels, 3,300 m² of cladding panels and 2,200 linear metres of railings – these are just some of the key data for this mammoth project. The twenty external shaping glulam elements have an arched section of around 15 meters and a total length of 55 meters each.
Due to these dimensions, a holistic logistics and assembly concept was developed at an early stage together with our partner and client, the Austrian company Almholz. This made it possible to provide the glulam elements with two joints each at the factory in Kleinheubach and to prefabricate them completely. After delivery to the construction site, the individual elements could then be joined and erected on site. Each of the finished arch elements weighs around 17 tons.
MILESTONE
In terms of the complexity of the load-bearing structure, the architecture and the requirements of structural timber protection, this unique project marks another milestone and at the same time a first in the project history of HESS TIMBER. The high degree of prefabrication and the subsequent precise joining and erection of the glulam elements was one of the greatest tests for all those involved.
