A new station with a striking wooden roof was built in the Dutch town of Ede. In view of increasing passenger numbers, the municipality of Ede and ProRail decided to expand the existing station back in 2008. The aim was to create a modern station that combines functionality, safety and sustainability.
Striking wooden roofing
The heart of the new Ede-Wageningen station is the striking wooden roof, which consists of large triangles. The main girders with a length of 27 m form the side edges of the triangles. The smaller inner triangles give the roof construction its characteristic appearance with the help of glazed openings, which ensure the entry of light.
Assembly during operation
A particular challenge was the installation during ongoing rail operations. In order to disrupt this as little as possible, all 23 triangles were installed over the platforms and tracks over just two weekends. In addition to the main roof, two further roofs were installed for the actual station building and the bicycle parking area. The timber construction was carried out by HESS TIMBER, in cooperation with the Dutch company De Groot Vroomshoop, for the general contractor EdesPoort.
