A new railroad station is being built in Cambridge to meet the constantly growing demand for rail transport. The Cambridge Railway Station will connect the Cambridge Biomedical Campus and the neighbouring town of Trumpington to the existing network and serve around 1.8 million passengers a year. The opening is planned for the end of 2025. The design focused on sustainability and user-friendliness. Wood was chosen as the primary construction material for the station building and the platform roofs. Due to the exposed location, weather-resistant larch wood was used.
Challenging assembly
The installation was carried out during ongoing operations, with the proximity to live railroad lines posing a particular challenge. Several so-called Possession Weekends were necessary to stop rail traffic and switch off the power supply. During these limited time windows, the assembly teams worked in shifts around the clock.
