The 1948 Olympic Games in London took place over 70 years ago. These were the first Games since the end of the Second World War. The track cycling competition took place on the grounds of the Herne Hill Velodrome in south London. The velodrome is therefore not only one of the oldest tracks in the world, but also one of the most traditional facilities of its kind in the UK. Towards the end of the 20th century, however, the site and the pavilion on it gradually fell into disrepair – until finally, in 2010, those responsible decided to save this impressive site of cycling history.
Completed in 2017, the new pavilion, which is similar in size and appearance to its predecessor, now has a load-bearing and wall structure made of wood.
“The pavilion consists of around 18 m³ of glulam and cross-laminated timber. The tight radii of the load-bearing structure are a special feature. We are proud to have been involved in this historically significant sports project.”
