The market share of electric vehicles is steadily increasing worldwide. For this reason, a conventional Shell filling station in London’s Fulham district has been converted into an “EV Hub”, a filling station for electric cars. The “EV Hub” is the first of its kind in the UK and has 10 powerful, covered charging points.
50 m³ of weather-resistant larch glulam and around 60 m² of cross-laminated timber were used for the roofing. The larger of the two roofs has 8 axes and measures 22 m horizontally. The smaller, opposite roof structure has 4 axes and measures around 10 m in length. Photovoltaic panels (PV) are installed on the two cantilevered roofs measuring around 7 m, ensuring that the charging process is powered exclusively by renewable electricity. At the base points, the glulam supports were anchored using stainless steel slotted plates set in concrete.
The system is braced by the cross-laminated timber elements resting on the glulam construction. The entire timber construction could be assembled in just a few days, as the individual axes were prefabricated in the factory and transported to the construction site as a whole. This ensured efficient assembly on site. The official opening took place in January 2022.
